After the disastrous Hartford, Connecticut, fire of July 6, 1944, the Ringling show played without a big top at Chicago's Soldier Field stadium. There, the circus faced the notorious Chicago politics and corruption; the Chicago Park Board, which controlled Soldier Field, charged an extra 55¢ on all reserved seat passes, which went into its coffers. In addition, it controlled the concessions (the circus's candy butchers were not allowed in the stadium), and published its own sixteen-page program, whose cover is shown here.
