Les petites acrobates, oil on canvas, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). The subjects are Franzisca and Agelina Wartenberg, who belonged to a well-known German family of circus artists. They hold in their hands the oranges the audience threw in the ring as a token of appreciation (similarly, rotten tomatoes could be thrown at artists who didn't please the audience...)
