Poster for the Cirque Medrano, featuring the actor and musician Pierre Mingand (1900-1982), caricatured on the left by Jan Mara (1912-1992). Mingand was a movie star in the 1930s and during the German occupation of Paris (1940-1944). Parisian circuses had then a hard time getting enough circus artists to complete their programs, and often used theater and movie stars, and popular singers and comedians to headline their shows.
